The Nix Patterson Teaching Courtroom

Technology Integration

Integrating Modern AV Technology into a
Timeless Courtroom Setting

Founded in 1883, the School of Law is one of the UT Austin’s original colleges and a cornerstone of legal education. With a legacy of excellence, the school sought to expand its facilities with a state-of-the-art courtroom designed to accommodate training of future legal professionals in a realistic environment.

After previous successful collaborations, UT Law again chose to partner with the LAITS Technology Integration team. The challenge: incorporate modern AV systems into a dignified courtroom setting without compromising the aesthetic or legal integrity of the space.

Design Challenges

  • Aesthetic Integration – AV components blending into traditional courtroom architecture
  • Content Control – Judges selectively routing AV feeds to specific displays
  • Display Synchronization – Juror and witness monitors displaying identical content, regardless of source
  • Multi-Point Connectivity – Laptops and other devices connecting at the judge’s bench, attorney tables, lectern, and court reporter station
  • Wireless Presentation – Supporting BYOD devices using secure wireless protocols

Objectives

  • Create a fully functional courtroom simulation
  • Ensure flexible, secure AV routing
  • Provide intuitive control interfaces
  • Support wired and wireless presentation
  • Maintain privacy and legal compliance

Technology Solutions

AV Routing & Distribution
HDBaseT and AV-over-IP tech ensured high-quality, low-latency video, and the ability to route any input to any output.
Control Systems
Control logic ensured legal compliance. The judge’s control panel allowed previewing video feeds, selecting display destinations, and managing audio zones.
Connectivity
Available options include wired HDMI and USB-C ports, as well as wireless presentation with secure sharing
Audio Management
DSPs handled microphones, speakers, & zone-based audio control. Voice lift systems ensured clarity without feedback or echo.

Outcomes

  • The courtroom now serves as a cutting-edge training setting for UT Law students.
  • Faculty and students benefit from real-world simulation capabilities, including evidence presentation, cross-examination, & judicial review.
  • The AV system is scalable and future-proof, ready to adapt to evolving legal tech standards.
  • LAITS delivered a solution that respects tradition while embracing innovation, reinforcing UT Law’s reputation for excellence.
